Ricky Skerritt, Chairman of the Caribbean Tourism Organisation recently revealed how the market of luxury holidays to the Caribbean has thrived despite the global economic downturn.

However, not all is smooth sailing for Caribbean tourism, as despite the success of the holiday industry the fact remains that the Caribbean still faces many challenges from the harsh economic climate.
Skerritt emphasised on the difficulties Caribbean tourism is facing by explaining how “visitor numbers are up but per-visitor expenditures are down, the length of stay is shrinking, and to prosper we must provide value for travel, affordable airlift and cost-effective marketing strategies,”
Talking about this year’s conference theme, Winning in a Competitive Environment, Ricky Skerritt added that the title was “appropriate, given the region is competing more and more with other destinations around the world”.
Organised by the Caribbean Tourism Organisation in collaboration with the St Martin Tourist Office, this event aimed to gather tourism experts from private and public travel sectors so that together they can address a number of critical tourism issues, including how to remain competitive in today’s saturated travel market, how to use limited resources to the greatest potential and how to jump the hurdles of intra-regional travel.
Present at this year’s State of the Industry conference was British airways Chief Executive Keith Williams who highlighted some of the major concerns facing the Caribbean holidays industry today, including the airline’s decision to cut services in the Caribbean due to the rising figures of Air Passenger Duty.
